Starting UAG in January

Hello everyone, sorry if this question has been repeated in the past. I was just wondering if current and past students could tell me a little bit about starting in January as opposed to the fall. I was told that after your four years, you could still do your fifth year in NY without waiting a semester - that is, you could start the pre-internship year in January as well. Is this true? Similarly, how does starting in January affect you when the time comes to apply to residencies? Does it hold you back a semester? Does starting in January affect you if you're trying to do parts of your third and fourth year in Arizona? Thank you in advance.

Latin American ranking of UAG - drops to under 200 group

Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara Rankings | Top Universities (UAG scoring)

QS Latin American University Rankings 2013 | Top Universities (Complete list - UAG is ~200/301)

UAG has dropped from the ~100 group from 2011 to 180 in 2012 on the list to under 200 for this year's list. This list is compiled yearly by QS, an independent ranking organization. Here's their methodology, from their website:

What criteria does QS Stars use when rating universities, and why?
There has been much discussion around what attributes form a world-class university, particularly with the growing popularity of university rankings and the criteria used to assess universities worldwide.
Much criticism has been directed to the criteria used in rankings and other assessments, based on the argument that universities are different to one another and therefore need to be assessed on a range of categories that recognize distinct strengths.
The following criteria, the basis for QS Stars ratings, were selected as the key pillars of what makes a world class university, taking into account a number of factors that are often overlooked in university rankings and other assessments.
Research

Indicators considered here include domestic assessments of research quality, productivity (i.e. number of papers published), citations (i.e. how recognized and referred to those papers are by other academics) and awards (e.g. Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals).
Teaching

A key role of a university is the nurture of tomorrow's finest minds, inspiring the next generation of potential research academics. Typical indicators here are domestic teaching quality assessments, collation of student feedback, national student surveys and student faculty ratios.
Employability

Graduate employability encompasses more than academic strength, focusing on ‘work-readiness’ - the ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural team, to deliver presentations, to manage people and projects. Common indicators in this area are surveys of employers, graduate employment rates and average graduate salaries.
Facilities

University infrastructure is an indicator which enables students to know what to expect from their university experience. Indicators such as sporting and medical facilities, number of students societies are considered within this criterion.
Internationalization

Here, effective indicators could be the proportion of international students and staff, the numbers of exchange students arriving and departing, the number and strength of international partnerships with other universities or the number of graduates pursuing further study at overseas universities.
Innovation

Innovation, the output of the universities activities and findings to economy, society and culture, has become increasingly relevant for universities.
Engagement

An effective indicator showing the university's contribution to its local community.
Access

This area looks at the accessibility of the university to students. It looks at areas such as scholarships and bursaries, disability access and gender balance.

United States Medical Licensing Examination | Announcements

As stated in the USMLE Bulletin of Information and as explained in a previous posting to the USMLE website, the level of proficiency required to meet the recommended minimum passing level for each USMLE Step examination is reviewed periodically and may be adjusted at any time. Notice of such review and any adjustments are posted at the USMLE website.

Every three to four years the Step Committees are asked to complete an in-depth review of standards, and they may schedule more frequent reviews. At its June 2013 meeting, the Step 2 Committee conducted a review for USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK). As a result of its review, the Step 2 Committee decided to raise the Step 2 recommended minimum passing score from 196 to 203. The Committee will closely monitor the effects of this decision on examinees and schools, and will examine trends in performance on an annual basis.

The new minimum passing score will be applied to Step 2 CK examinations for which the first day of testing is on or after July 1, 2013.

New Canadian Travel Advisory to Regions of Mexico

From Travel Advice and Advisories for Mexico

MEXICO - Exercise a high degree of caution

There is no nationwide advisory in effect for Mexico. However, you should exercise a high degree of caution, especially in those parts of the country experiencing a deteriorating security situation. Most major tourist areas have not been affected by the extreme levels of violence in the northern region.
The Yucatan Peninsula, which includes the tourist destinations of Cancun, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Merida and Progreso, has not been significantly affected by violence or insecurity.
We strongly recommend travel to Mexico by air in order to avoid land border crossings through potentially dangerous regions. High levels of criminal activity, as well as occasional illegal roadblocks, demonstrations and protests remain a concern throughout the country. For these reasons, you are strongly advised to sign up with the Registration of Canadians Abroad (ROCA) service if travelling to or residing in Mexico.
Due to high levels of organized crime in rural areas, including on major highways, you should exercise extreme caution in the states of Baja California (North) , Nayarit, Jalisco, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, and Zacatecas.
The coastal areas of Jalisco (from Puerto Vallarta to Barra de Navidad) and southern Nayarit (from Nuevo Vallarta to La Peñita de Jaltemba), popular destinations among Canadians, remain relatively safe, as do the Lake Chapala area and the capital cities of Guadalajara, San Luis Potosi, Veracruz, and, Zacatecas. When travelling in these states, exercise extreme caution when venturing outside urban areas.

Regional Advisory for the Northern states

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada advises against non-essential travel to the northern states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Nuevo León, Sinaloa (with the exception of Mazatlán), Sonora (except the cities of Hermosillo, Guaymas/San Carlos and Nogales), and Tamaulipas due to continuously high levels of violence linked to organized crime. Only travel on Highway 15 from Nogales to Ciudad Obregon during daylight hours. Consult theSecurity tab for more information.

Regional Advisory for the South-Western states

Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada also advises against non-essential travel to the south western states of Michoacán (excluding the city of Morelia) and Guerrero (excluding the cities ofIxtapa, Taxco and Zihuatanejo, as well as the tourist zone of Acapulco) due to the high levels of violence and organized crime. Exercise a high degree of caution in the excluded areas. Consult the Security tab for more information.

http://www.valuemd.com/uag-medical-s...ml#post1483029

Sadly I've had to put a big disclaimer on the course structure of the programme since that information is WAAAaaayy out of date and no one has stepped forward to help bring it up to date; a relic it shall remain.

Pre-Med courses before going to UAG?

$

Hi there, a little new to the forum.

But I've always had this interest to one day go to UAG. I'm 18 years old, starting my second semester of college soon, and I've decided to go onto the pre-med route without a major. So I know that basically I have to take the following courses such as:

English 1A
Biology
Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Math
And Physics

Is there anything else that I am missing? And what sort of math classes should I be taking for a good transfer to UAG? Or can anyone give a quick honest review of the school. I know the area of Guadalajara very well since I go on my vacations there every six months.

internship changes - must know

I was talking to a friend from 8th semester whose class is about 200 people and they recently discovered that there are no spots in NY to accommodate even the people who already passed the USMLE and sent their application. They told me there are 38 spots in NY and the possibility of 2 spots opening in Arizona for Arizona residents.

The administration told them they can do the internship in Mexico if there are no spots in NY. :noidea: or look for their own internship in the US

There is confusion whether the administration will help look for spots, or the students should talk to the hospitals on their own or the hospitals approached by the students should talk to NY.

I applied to the international program to have two years of basic sciences in English, two clinical years in Spanish and the fifth year in NYMC or Arizona or Texas or whatever other program the school makes an agreement with in the UNITED STATES.

How can we prevent this from happening to us before we get to 8th semester and find out three months before graduation that we cannot go back home? and anyone from 8th semester, please let us know your updates.
